June 8th – Davina and the Vagabonds

This year’s Live on the Drive Concert Series will be kicking off the summer with Davina and the Vagabonds on June 8th from 6pm-8pm.

Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, level A musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism, and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. In 2011 Davina released her first full length, all original album Black Cloud . It was named one of the 10 best releases of the year by the Minneapolis Star & Tribune and awarded 4 ½ stars from Downbeat Magazine. Their next release in 2014, Sunshine, hit number 13 in the Billboard Blues Chart and led them to be a musicial feature on the hit BBC show, Later with Jools Holland.

DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original.

Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. This has set the Vagabonds apart at festivals in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Sighisoara, Romania; Sierre, Switzerland; Kemi, Finland; the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival ( in 2014 was asked back to play their main stage in 2014, Vache de Blues in France, and North Sea Jazz Festival. Catch this one-of-a-kind live show while they are in town!

“Listening to Davina & the Vagabonds is like stepping into a wondrous musical time machine. They have the panache and superlative musicianship to recreate the retro sound and ageless appeal of golden age Americana in high-definition reality on stage for your immense pleasure and enjoyment.”  -Thunder Bay Blues Festival/Canada

“….one of the most distinctive and expressive vocalists to come around in a while, with tight backing from the Vagabonds” –Phoenix Blues Society

“…easily among the breakout stars at this year’s [Monterey Jazz] festival.” – Monterey Herald

Rio Nido Is Live On the Drive June 9th

The annual Northside summer concert series Live on the Drive returns for its ninth year. Rio Nido, Jazz trio kick off the concert series on Thursday, June 9th, from 6 to 8pm (Rain Date June 30th). This will be the first of three concerts held outdoors this summer on the scenic Victory Memorial Drive at 34th Avenue North in Minneapolis, one of the most beautiful concert settings in the city. (Our recent local ads had the wrong date listed, sorry! It is definitely June 9th)Rio Nido

Rio Nido is one of the Twin Cities’ most beloved vocal groups. The original trio of Tim Sparks, Prudence Johnson, and Tom Lieberman established themselves as ace performers, playing classic jazz from the 1930s and ’40s at the hottest spots in Minneapolis between 1972 and 1986. Each member eventually moved on to enjoy successful solo careers. The group has come back together for a handful of reunion shows including Live on the Drive.

Ashley DuBose Band PhotoAshley Dubose – August 11th

Ashley DuBose is probably most widely known for her participation in Season 5 of NBC’s The Voice, but her musical journey began years before her world debut on the hit reality TV show. Ashley’s music creation process is often collaborative, unconstrained and spontaneous, very much reflective of her free-spirited nature. For this reason, one might hear elements of hip hop, blended with neo-soul-like lyricism on the verses, and a catchy pop-worthy hook all in one song that’s laced with an acoustic guitar loop.In 2014, Ashley was named “Best Vocalist (Female)” by City Pages in their annual Best of the Twin Cities magazine issue.

Bus Rapid Transit Route 19: 35th or 36th Station?

BRT C-Line RouteIn 2017, Penn Avenue will likely see the opening of the new C-Line, a Rapid Transit bus that runs along the route of the current 19, down Penn and east on Olson Highway to downtown. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) blends the benefits of Light Rail with the low impact of a bus route for a combination that should result in easier and faster commutes for the thousands of riders that take the 19 every day. You can learn lot’s more about the C-Line on the Metro Transit website. Right now Metro Transit is gathering feedback from transit riders and residents on the Station Locations along the route. You are welcome to contact Metro Transit with your comments directly about any and all of the station locations and plans. Today, CNA is asking for your input on one specific location, whether a station should exist at 35th Avenue North or 36th Avenue North and Penn Avenue. There will most likely be a station at Lowry and Dowling, but also one in between at either of those two intersections. We’d like your feedback on which one you’d prefer and why. Please take a minute to fill out our brief survey so we can be more informed about the perspective of our residents. Thanks! (Take the survey below or at this link)
