HOME Program

Maintaining a home can be very difficult for an older adult living on a fixed income. Without services from a program like HOME (Household & Outside Maintenance for Elderly), Minnesota’s largest chore services program for seniors operated by Senior Community Services, many older people may continue to live in a home that is not up to their standards or be forced to move to a nursing home. The purpose of the HOME program is to help seniors to remain independent in a clean, safe environment by providing  accessible, reliable and affordable chore services.

In January 2015, Senior Community Services’ HOME program expanded to include Minneapolis, which allows the program to serve hundreds more seniors in Minneapolis, in addition to those already being served elsewhere in Hennepin County.

“Senior Community Services is pleased to bring Minneapolis seniors into our program. There is a growing need for services that help struggling and low-income seniors and caregivers maintain independence,” says CEO Deb Taylor. “Without this program, many seniors would have to trade their homes for a more structured, and more costly, senior facility. In addition, Minneapolis residents now have access to a broad array of other helpful services from us,” Taylor added.

Some of the chore services that the HOME program provides include:

• Vacuuming
• Dusting
• Sweeping/Mopping floors
• Cleaning bathrooms
• Cleaning kitchens
• Changing Bed Linens

Seniors Helping Seniors – Locates seniors who volunteer their time assisting fellow seniors with in home care and chore services  General: (763)694-0165

 

OLU’S HOME, INC.  striving for a Holistic Life… Dedicated to Serving

OLU’S HOME INC. was selected to partner this time with Hennepin County. OLU’S HOME INC.’s goal with this service is to offer services customized to each individual’s needs. We offer an array of services that individuals may choose which fits his/her wants and needs, including but not limited to:

• Staffing services including Nursing
• Family/Interpersonal Connections
• Community Integration/Socialization

Transitional Services – useful service for individuals that are wanting to transition from community-based housing to independent or semi-independent residence. Services covered under this service include:

• Lease and Rental deposits
• Essential furniture
• Utility set up fees and deposits
• Personal supports to assist in locating and transitioning to the community-based housing
• Basic household items
• Personal items
• One-time pest and allergen treatment of the unit

 

Luthern Social Services – Senior Corps

Foster Grandparent Program– wherein we have our volunteers (55+) work with children in school or daycare settings that are at risk of falling behind their age groups.  Our volunteers work with them to meet academic and social/emotional expectations by mentoring them and by creating a positive relationship with someone who is not in a position of authority.

Senior Companion Program- has volunteers (55+) that serve frail and elderly folks in their homes.  They spend time together and do things that friends might do: play cards or games, chat over a cup of coffee, share a meal, and form a strong relationship.  Our volunteers also serve as a way for our clients to get out into the community by taking them to the doctor, grocery shopping, and by finding fun activities to do with one another.

In exchange for this valuable service, we offer our volunteers a tax-free stipend, travel reimbursement, and other benefits.  These things would not affect any income based benefits they might be receiving.

 

Handyworks

Helps seniors and the disabled live independently at home, by matching them with people who can help with housekeeping, minor home repairs, lawn-mowing, snow removal, seasonal jobs, and outdoor chores. Application deadline is in the spring.

A Brush with Kindness

Volunteers help low-income homeowners do minor exterior repairs, light landscaping, clean-up, and painting. Able-bodied homeowners work alongside volunteers on repairs.

Metro Paint-A-Thon

Helps low-income seniors and people with permanent physical disabilities continue to live independently in their own homes. Each summer, particularly the first weekend of August, teams of volunteers paint home exteriors for those who can no longer physically do such maintenance and cannot afford to hire a contractor. Rebuilding Together

Provides volunteer-delivered repairs, including weatherizing, cleaning, installing flooring, patching and painting, siding, and landscaping. Can also provide larger assistance like repair or replacement of vital systems in a home, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, outer envelope, and/or roof systems.

Minneapolis Health Department

Currently accepting grant applications to fix lead hazards in the homes built before 1978. This grant is available for income-qualified owner-occupied and rental properties.
