Considering Speed Bumps on 34th Avenue North – Penn to Russell

speedbumps

The City of Minneapolis is considering speed bumps on 34th Avenue N between Russell Ave and Penn Ave. This will improve safety for students at Lucy Laney School and others walking or biking to Cleveland Park. This is a part of a federally-funded Safe Routes to School Project serving North and Northeast Minneapolis Schools.

Things to Know:

  • Speed bumps reduce the speed of automobiles by an average of 7 to 25 mph.
  • Traffic accidents are reduced. In a study of speed bumps in Portland, OR, accidents went down by 48%.
  • If approached at a reasonable speed, speed bumps do not cause vehicle damage.  Signage and pavement markings will be used to alert motorists of approaching speed bumps.

Please share your thoughts on these potential speed bumps with Forrest Hardy, Minneapolis Public Works, 350 S 5th Street, Room 233, Minneapolis, 55415, 612-333-3410, forrest.hardy@minneapolismn.gov

Monday, May 6th, from 6-6:30pm Forrest Hardy will be available to answer questions and talk with residents out at 34th Avenue North between Russell and Penn Avenue regarding the speed bumps being proposed there.

7:00-7:30pm Cleveland Neighborhood residents will meet at the CNA Office, 3333 Penn Ave (on the south end of the school building) to discuss the proposed speed bumps and whether the neighborhood should support the effort. (This will be the second half of the monthly Crime and Safety meeting)

If you have any questions regarding these gatherings please contact Ariah Fine

Youth Committee Tonight!

Laney students with Mayor Rybak

Why take an hour out of your evening for a youth committee? Here are a few reasons:

  • There are 700+ youth under the age of 18 living in the Cleveland Neighborhood
  • Cleveland is home to Lucy Craft Laney Community School were 600+ students from Pre-K through 8th grade spend the majority of their day learning and becoming engaged citizens.
  • Cleveland Park, though unstaffed, draws youth and families to picnic and play with it’s splash pad, basketball courts and playgrounds.

So whether you are a kid, or have kids, or just want to make sure our youth have an opportunity to become active and productive members of our community, it’s worth coming out and helping the Cleveland Neighborhood be proactive in engaging the young people in our community. Here are some of the items on the agenda for this evening:

  • Summer Park Program – We’ll be partnering with Plymouth Youth Center for the third year in a row to provide a drop-in day program at Cleveland Park for neighborhood youth. We’ll discuss the program, gather feedback and think about how to improve collaboration with community organizations.
  • We’ll discuss the potential for evening programming in the Park once a week.
  • STEP-UP youth internships – We’ll share about opportunities to have young people working with the CNA staff to connect with more neighborhood residents and help with programming.
  • New Ideas – We’ll leave plenty of space for you to bring your ideas. This is a new committee and we are in need of new energy and voices. If you’d like to be a part of it we’d love to have you join us.

We hope to see you tonight at 6:30pm at the Cleveland Neighborhood Offices. Call if you have any questions 612-588-1155

This is What Community Looks Like

Community Conversations
Click the Image to view more of the event photos

A wonderful group of residents turned out on Tuesday evening for pizza and conversation about their community. The topics ranged from Business and Commerce to Community Gardens to how to get neighbors involved in their community and in the schools. Residents joined the topic that was most interesting to them and were free to move around from table to table as their interest and passion guided them. The result was a couple rounds of great conversation, a collection of notes and a lot of new connections between neighbors.

In the coming weeks we’ll share report backs from the different conversations here on the website and encourage more resident input. The purpose of these conversations is to have residents drive the conversation about what they’d like to see happen in their community and form action plans for moving us there. The next Community Conversation event will be June 25th and will build off of Tuesday’s meeting with more topics of discussion driven by residents and then a “pro-action cafe” that will focus on next steps to reaching the goals and vision the community wants. RSVP for the June Conversation today.

This event was made possible through a grant from the Bush Foundation. We would also like to thank the amazing staff at The Lowry Cafe for the delicious pizza and discounted space rental. Be sure to stop by for their first open evening this Friday for the Open Mic.

(Coming soon at the bottom of this post: Notes from yesterday’s event)
