You know the saying: “The Community that reads together stays together, is safer, more connected, more caring, and just a better place to live.” (Really? You haven’t heard that one before?). This summer we’ll kick-off a project to promote literacy in the Cleveland community as a tool to connect neighbors with one another.
The Book Fiesta is a great community event for the whole family. We’ll have music, food, games and prizes all in a concentrated effort to promote reading, writing and building community. The event will take place at Lucy Laney school from 10-2pm the Saturday after school let’s out. Be sure to stop on through or if you’re interested, we’d love to have you volunteer! Contact the office for more info.
Why take an hour out of your evening for a youth committee? Here are a few reasons:
There are 700+ youth under the age of 18 living in the Cleveland Neighborhood
Cleveland is home to Lucy Craft Laney Community School were 600+ students from Pre-K through 8th grade spend the majority of their day learning and becoming engaged citizens.
Cleveland Park, though unstaffed, draws youth and families to picnic and play with it’s splash pad, basketball courts and playgrounds.
So whether you are a kid, or have kids, or just want to make sure our youth have an opportunity to become active and productive members of our community, it’s worth coming out and helping the Cleveland Neighborhood be proactive in engaging the young people in our community. Here are some of the items on the agenda for this evening:
Summer Park Program – We’ll be partnering with Plymouth Youth Center for the third year in a row to provide a drop-in day program at Cleveland Park for neighborhood youth. We’ll discuss the program, gather feedback and think about how to improve collaboration with community organizations.
We’ll discuss the potential for evening programming in the Park once a week.
STEP-UP youth internships – We’ll share about opportunities to have young people working with the CNA staff to connect with more neighborhood residents and help with programming.
New Ideas – We’ll leave plenty of space for you to bring your ideas. This is a new committee and we are in need of new energy and voices. If you’d like to be a part of it we’d love to have you join us.
We hope to see you tonight at 6:30pm at the Cleveland Neighborhood Offices. Call if you have any questions 612-588-1155
We have a great group of neighbors that have begun gathering to talk about how the Cleveland Neighborhood can better support the youth in our community. In collaboration with Voices Merging, the Cleveland Neighborhood Association will be hosting Listening Sessions and Writing Workshops with local Spoken Word artist every Friday in April at the Cleveland office. Join us from 5-7 pm to share your thoughts on the community and issues that are important to you, enjoy some refreshments and then practice your writing skills and learn from local Spoken Word artists.

This past summer and fall, Cleveland Neighborhood took an in-depth look at what residents wanted to see Cleveland Park become. We spent hours at the park talking to park users, knocking on doors of nearby neighbors, collecting surveys of Cleveland residents and hosting focus groups with neighbors. Join us on February 11th from 6:30-7pm at the CNA Offices for a brief presentation and conversation around the final community vision document.
Thanks to the tireless work of Landscape Architecture student, Amber Hill, and Professor, Kristine Miller, our community engagement efforts have resulted in a final vision that we can use as an advocacy tool when talking with the Park Board, which has funding allocated for Cleveland Park in 2017, as well as other potential funding sources. This visioning project will also help to tie together two previous efforts by Cleveland residents: to help vision future development on the north west corner of Penn and Lowry Avenue and input on a master plan for the Lucy Craft Laney school grounds.
Please come out to the event or stay tuned to the website for the complete document available for you online . Cleveland Park is your park, your community space, your common space with your neighbors so be sure to come out and share YOUR vision for Cleveland Commons 2020!
