A Green Home On Russell Avenue

3210 Vincent perspectiveA vacant lot at 3241 Russell Avenue in the Cleveland Neighborhood will be the site of a brand new Green Home this year and you have an opportunity to visit the site and learn more about it. The developer Peyser construction will have a gathering at the site next Tuesday at 6pm for those interested in learning more. Here’s they’re letter:

I would like to inform you of our company’s intention to construct a new single family home on the property noted above in your neighborhood and invite you to an informational pre-construction meeting where we will present the project and provide you an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and help insure a successful construction process.
The meeting must occur at least 15 days prior to the planned construction start (mid June), should last about 30 minutes and will be held at the project site (rain or shine):
Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Time: 6:00-6:30pm
Location: 3241 Russell Avenue North
Minneapolis, MN 55412
This home is part of the City of Minneapolis “Green Homes North” program whose goal is to build over a five year period 100 sustainable and affordable single family homes on vacant properties, all in the neighborhoods of north Minneapolis. These homes will be sold to qualified new owner occupant homeowners that make a commitment to your neighborhood, and the home we plan to build is similar to the two projects we built last year as part of this program at 3858 Sheridan North and 4150 Upton North. More information can be found at the Green Homes North website: www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/cped/
housing/GreenHomesNorth
Our goal is for the construction period to last 3-4 months and to have the home ready for showing at the end of this summer. We intend to be as respectful as possible during the construction period, and the contact information for the developer, contractor and real estate agent will be posted on site during construction.
Thank you, we hope to see you at the informational meeting on May 27th.
Sincerely,
Peyser LLC

We’re Kicking off Live on the Drive with Thomasina Petrus

thomasina profile picThe annual Northside summer concert series Live on the Drive returns for it’s seventh year. The soulful Thomasina Petrus and her band kick off the concert series on Thursday, June 12th, from 6 to 8pm. This will be the first of three concerts held outdoors this summer on the scenic Victory Memorial Drive at 34th Avenue North in Minneapolis, one of the most beautiful concert settings in the city.

Thomasina Petrus is a premier jazz/gospel/rhythm and blues vocalist who has performed on stages both local and abroad. Her singing and acting career has spanned the past 20 years, as she has cultivated her talents through mentorships and friendships of some of the Twin Cities most beloved artists, including Jevetta Steele, Prince, and T. Mycheal Rambo.

Come with an appetite and enjoy dinner from food vendors The Lowry Café, Mama Donato’s Woodfired Pizza, Gramsky’s Sandwiches, and treat yourself with gelato from Nona Rossa’s. Stay into the evening for a movie in the park, featuring Remember The Titans at dusk right at the Live on the Drive concert site. Our “green” events feature recycling and composting, diverting 93% of materials out of the waste stream last year. Be sure to invite your neighbors and bring your friends to this family-friendly, all-ages event!

Live on the Drive is presented by founding partner, North Memorial, with the Cleveland Neighborhood Association, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, North End Hardware and The Lowry Café, Hennepin County, Westphal Auxiliary Legion, Healy Creative, North News, Victory Neighborhood Association, Washburn-McReavy, and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Live on the Drive brings people together from across the Northside and throughout the greater Twin Cities to hear extraordinary music and to celebrate summer, good health and Northside city living. Last summer, over 4,500 people attended, and we expect even more will come out to see this summer’s incredible slate of Minneapolis-based musicians: jazz vocalist Thomasina Petrus (June 12th), rock and classical fusion act Clocks & Clouds (July 10th), and folk/indie rock band Bomba de Luz (August 14th). Food vendors and Movies in the Park are back to finish out each concert night: family-friendly movie Remember the Titans (June 12th), Black Film Festival pick Soul Food Junkie (July 10th), and Black and White classic Psycho (August 14th). Our Bike to the Drive event in August, Artist Spotlights during intermission and more will round out what has become a staple of summer on the Northside.

What Would You Do With $500 To Make a Difference?

$500 connector lab video

This month, as we host events for  30 Days of Community, we are asking residents what they would do with $500 to make a difference in their community. Check out our video and read below to learn more.

Our goal is to pick one to three ideas were there is a lot of interest and energy from residents and provide a $500 mini-grant and support and resources to turn those ideas into a reality. We’re calling this project the Connector Lab and we are looking for your ideas and your willingness to get involved. Stop by 2205 Lowry Ave N during the 30 Days of Community events to share your idea on our idea wall or text or call with your idea to 612-567-1262 or just email us and we’ll add it in.

Join us for an Undoing Racism Workshop

raceare-we-so-different-69This Thursday, April 17th, we’ll host a community workshop on Undoing Racism as part of our 30 Days of Community. We hope you and your neighbors can join us for this important work.

Understanding racism is the first step in eliminating it from our communities. In this dialogue, participants look critically at cultural beliefs and myths that perpetuate racism. Previous participants have walked away from this dialogue noting that they have more language, history, and knowledge to bring into future anti-racism work.

“This is a great opportunity to better understand the myths around racism and in turn better understand each other in the world we share.” shared Stephanie Gasca, a Cleveland Neighborhood resident who attend a recent workshop in February. She is hopeful that more Cleveland residents can attend the workshop she is helping host on Thursday so that we can expand the dialog for the benefit of our neighborhood.

Participants learn to see racism in our society on individual and institutional levels and create action plans to make change. Instructor, Sarah Super is the Facing Race Dialog coordinator for the YWCA Twin Cities.

Where: 2205 Lowry Ave N. (next to the Lowry Cafe
When: April 17th 6:00-8:30pm
Who: Adults and teens (from any neighborhood or organization in the community)

RSVP by emailing cna@Clevelandneighborhood.org or calling 612-588-1155
