It’s a great time to get together, share a meal, play some games, and meet those who live nearby. But it doesn’t have to be the only time. We’re here to help you connect with your neighbors the rest of the year and there are lots of resources available to help you do so. Need help getting a block contact list going? Want to host another block get together? Ready to do a community mural? Let us know, we are here to help.

Javier Trejo at Live on the Drive August 13th

javiertrejoThe annual Northside summer concert series Live on the Drive finishes out its eighth year with singer and songwriter Javier Trejo. The final concert will take place on Thursday, August 13th, from 6 to 8pm. A wonderful live music show on the scenic Victory Memorial Drive at 34th Avenue North in Minneapolis, one of the most beautiful concert settings in the city.

[button link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/1003477656348090/”] RSVP on Facebook[/button]

Born in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico and raised on St. Paul, Minnesota’s “Westside,” Trejo is a local artist with international roots. Javier’s musical influences range from old-school country and Tejano music to R&B and Rock ‘n’ Roll. His self-titled album presents Bossa Pop original songs inspired by the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jerry Garcia, Manu Chao, Arto Lindsay, Flaming Lips, David Gray, and RL Burnside. Javier Trejo’s songs transcend genres to create an intimate sound that seduces the listener.

Come with an appetite and enjoy dinner from food vendors The Lowry Café, Mama Donato’s Woodfired Pizza, Sandy’s, and treat yourself with gelato from Nona Rosa’s. Stay into the evening for a movie in the park, featuring Diary of a Wimpy Kid at dusk right at the Live on the Drive concert site. Our “green” events feature recycling and composting, diverting 93% of materials out of the waste stream last year. Be sure to invite your neighbors and bring your friends to this family-friendly, all-ages event!

Live on the Drive is presented the Cleveland Neighborhood Association with our founding partner, North Memorial, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Jazz88 KBEM, North End Hardware and The Lowry Café, Westphal Auxiliary Legion, Insight News, Healy Creative, North News, Victory Neighborhood Association, Washburn-McReavy, A-Sign 4 U, Hawthorne Neighborhood Council and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Live on the Drive brings people together from across the Northside and throughout the greater Twin Cities to hear extraordinary music and to celebrate summer, good health and Northside city living. Already this summer nearly 3000 people have come out to see our incredible slate of Minneapolis-based musicians: jazz vocalist Debbie Duncan (June 11th), Hip-Hop Artist Toki Wright (July 9th), and Guitarist Javier Trejo (August 13th). Food vendors and Movies in the Park are back to finish out each concert night: Diary of a Wimpy Kid (June 11th), We Bought a Zoo (July 9th), and The Blind Side (August 13th). Our Artist Spotlights during intermission and more will round out what has become a staple of summer on the Northside.

Safe Routes to School Improvements at Lucy Laney

If you were wondering what some of the street construction was on Lowry Avenue or Penn Avenue near Lucy Laney School here’s a quick update from the City of Minneapolis:

Street Crossing Improvements at 3 locations, and bike parking improvements

Purpose: to aid existing walk to school programs at Lucy Laney and encourage more students to walk and bike to school. The treatments being constructed are effective at improving pedestrian crossings near schools. The stamped median is a new tool that was well received at Bancroft School in south Minneapolis. This project was presented to the Cleveland and Folwell neighborhoods in fall 2013, and was developed in collaboration with Hennepin County and MNDOT. It is funded 100% by a federal Safe Routes to School grant.
