What a Wonderful Week In Pictures

Summer is a busy time in the Cleveland Neighborhood as we open wide our gathering spaces and invite the community in to enjoy the beautiful amenities and beautiful people that make up this great neighborhood. In just a weeks time we hosted hundreds of neighbors at two wonderful and unique community events.

Last Thursday, Toki Wright rocked the stage at Live on the Drive, the weather was beautiful, the community was sublime and the evening closed out with a movie in the park. Take a look at the pictures from this great evening on Facebook.

Yesterday, at Cleveland Park, the Cleveland Youth Committee hosted it’s Party in the Park event. Party in the Park brings together residents to enjoy the great amenities the park has to offer, enjoy a community dinner together, and learn about resources and opportunities in the community. We had sponsors tabling from the Northside Vegans, Wirth Coop and Prodeo Academy. We also had the University of Minnesota Raptor Center come and share their amazing live birds including two falcons and an owl. See pictures of Party in the Park on Facebook.06-IMG_0569

Toki Wright at Live on the Drive on July 9th

Toki Wright & Big Cats Press Photo - Credit Peter JamusThe annual Northside summer concert series Live on the Drive continues its eighth year. The rhythm and sounds of local artist Toki Wright will fill the parkway on Thursday, July 9th, from 6 to 8pm. A wonderful live music show on the scenic Victory Memorial Drive at 34th Avenue North in Minneapolis, one of the most beautiful concert settings in the city.

Blend soulful yet futuristic music with intelligent writing and you have Toki Wright. Wright’s has played for sold out audiences throughout the United States, Asia, Canada, Africa, Europe, and South America solo and toured alongside artists like Brother Ali, Devin The Dude, Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Atmosphere, Sean Price and more. His newest release “Pangaea” fully produced by Big Cats has broken down new artistic doors and is rapidly gaining acclaim.

Come with an appetite and enjoy dinner from food vendors The Lowry Café, Mama Donato’s Woodfired Pizza, Sandy’s, and treat yourself with gelato from Nona Rosa’s. Stay into the evening for a movie in the park, featuring We Bought a Zoo at dusk right at the Live on the Drive concert site. Our “green” events feature recycling and composting, diverting 93% of materials out of the waste stream last year. Be sure to invite your neighbors and bring your friends to this family-friendly, all-ages event!

Live on the Drive is presented the Cleveland Neighborhood Association with our founding partner, North Memorial, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Jazz88 KBEM, North End Hardware and The Lowry Café, Westphal Auxiliary Legion, Insight News, Healy Creative, North News, Victory Neighborhood Association, Washburn-McReavy, A-Sign 4 U, Hawthorne Neighborhood Council and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Live on the Drive brings people together from across the Northside and throughout the greater Twin Cities to hear extraordinary music and to celebrate summer, good health and Northside city living. Last summer, over 4,500 people attended, and we expect even more will come out to see this summer’s incredible slate of Minneapolis-based musicians: jazz vocalist Debbie Duncan (June 11th), Hip-Hop Artist Toki Wright (July 9th), and Guitarist Javier Trejo (August 13th). Food vendors and Movies in the Park are back to finish out each concert night: Diary of a Wimpy Kid (June 11th), We Bought a Zoo (July 9th), and The Blind Side (August 13th). Our Artist Spotlights during intermission and more will round out what has become a staple of summer on the Northside.

Pop-Up Block Parties Begin!

Block Party Flyer UniversalOn a lovely weekday afternoon this summer you’ll receive a flyer from some great high school students inviting you to a block party on your block. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to introduce yourself and pass on your contact info so we can stay in contact with you from the neighborhood association and connect you with others on your block. The students are part of our Summer Step-Up Team a summer employment program with a team of 6 students and a supervisor who will be doorknocking and hosting pop-up block parties throughout the Cleveland Neighborhood all summer long. Pop-Up’s are all about connecting you with neighbors. We’ll skip the blocking of the street and grilling out, but we’ll have snacks, lemonade, and plenty of games and prizes. Come out for a few minutes, meet some neighbors and join your block club so you can stay in touch all summer long.

The Northside Summer Guide is Here!

There are great things happening on the northside and sometimes many residents don’t even know what’s out there. In 2014, we launched the Northside Summer Community and Arts Guide, a comprehensive listings of community and arts events for youth and families in north Minneapolis. This guide was created so you would know about the concerts, festivals, camps, and activities happening in your community. We believe in the value of connecting neighbors to one another and to the great resources and opportunities in their community. Thanks to the amazing work of Juxtaposition Arts Graphic Design Lab in putting together this years summer guide. The 2015 Summer guide features 12 pages of events and is made possible by our many sponsors: Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, North Memorial, North End Hardware and Rental, The Lowry Cafe, Kris Lindahl Team,Victory Neighborhood Association, Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapels, Cemeteries and Cremation Services,Hawthorne Neighorhood Council, Camden Lions, Insight News,Northnews, Juxtaposition Arts, Project Sweetie Pie, The Loppet Foundation, Capri Theater, West Broadway Business & Area Coalition, and Faith Baptist Church.
