Transitions In The Neighborhood

Dear Cleveland Neighborhood Family,

It’s with mixed motions that I, Ariah Fine, current Executive Director at the Cleveland Neighborhood Association, share that in May I will be taking on an opportunity to serve as a Neighborhood Support Specialist with the City of Minneapolis Neighborhood and Community Relations Department (a mouthful I know). It’s bittersweet as I’m excited about the opportunity to work on equitable community engagement citywide, but sad to leave a job I’ve loved and enjoyed the past four years. You can help make the transition easier for me and the community by sharing out the job posting and helping us find a great person to carry out the good work of connecting neighbors and building a strong and vibrant Cleveland Neighborhood and north Minneapolis.

It’s moments like this when it’s truly important to step up and take an active role in your community. Consider Volunteering if you’ve enjoyed Live on the Drive, Party in the Park, Pop-up Block Parties, Spring Clean-up, handing out our receiving Welcome Bags, Tiny Fields, Community Gardens, Northside Housing Fair, Bike Giveaways, Mobile Ballpit, Block-Party-In-A-Box, or any other initiative you’ve seen in the neighborhood or want to see. We need residents to take an active role on their blocks and across the community, so consider Joining a Committee or Volunteering today. Together we can make the Cleveland Neighborhood live up to it’s motto: Small Neighborhood, Big Heart.

Sincerely,

Ariah Fine

Executive Director

Walking Wednesdays Are Here!

Want a joy boost that will wake you up and brighten your day better then any coffee? Come say hello and see the smiling faces of the Lucy Laney Elementary School students as they walk to school along 34th Avenue each Wednesday from 8:20-8:50.  Laney children who ride the school buses will be dropped off on Xerxes where they will be met by school staff. From there, the children will walk along 34th Street with staff, parents, friends and volunteers to school. We call this weekly ½ mile walk to school Walking Wednesdays.  Students who walk to school receive a concentration boost that lasts more than half the school day. They are also happier, more creative, and healthier too. Best of all, our children will love the experience of walking to school every week with the whole Laney Family.

Walking Wednesdays will run most Wednesdays this spring through the end of the school year.  Please give us a wave as we pass. Thank you for your part in this effort to raise academic achievement, increase student health, foster environmental consciousness and strengthen community ties. If you have questions or would like to help with this effort please contact Jalonda Combs, Jalonda.Combs@mpls.k12.mn.us, 612-668-2205.

Cleveland Garden Work Days

MWSnap 2016-03-23, 11_42_57The Cleveland Neighborhood Garden, located on the corner of Vincent and Lowry Avenues, serves as a gathering space for Cleveland residents and neighbors to grow nutritious food and connect with one another. The garden is run by a group of volunteers who meet monthly to plan activities and improvements and serve as liaisons with the community. Any and everyone is welcome to join and help us grow – not just gardeners.

We have Garden Work Days scheduled for Saturday, April 9 and Saturday, April 23 from 10 am – 2 pm. We will be spending our time preparing the neighborhood garden for our 3rd growing season. If you plan on attending, wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. We will be laying down paths and soil, shaping garden beds and doing general construction. If you are able, please bring a dish to share for our potluck style lunch on these days. RSVP and questions can be directed to eric@clevelandneighborhood.org or via phone (612) 217-2652.
