Share your thoughts on transit at StreetForum.org

street forumThis summer and fall as part of an effort to engagement more community members around issues of transit development, from Light Rail to Rapid Bus service, we launched a project called Street Forum. We spent time engaging bus riders while they waited at the bus stop and ask them what they thought about future development proposals, what they do and don’t like about the current system and what messages we could take to their public officials and to decisionmakers regarding transit.

See some of the recently posted videos and more to come at StreetForum.org. Leave a comment, respond with your own video. This is an opportunity to get a conversation started and spark community engagement and input outside of the typical evening community meeting. We hope you’ll join in the conversation. Reminder: Mayoral Forum Tomorrow Night

Your City Your Vote Minneapolis logoJust a quick reminder that if you’d like to hear directly from the Mayoral candidates this election, be sure to come out to our Northside Candidate Forum on October 8th at Folwell Park. This upcoming Mayoral Forum will be a great opportunity to hear from the current candidates. RSVP here.

Mayoral Forum – October 8th

6:00pm – 8:30pm

Folwell Park Gym
1615 N Dowling Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55412

From the Forum Hosts:

It is with great pleasure that we, a coalition of northside community organizations of color and allies, announce the first ever Northside Candidate Forums organized for and by northsiders moderated by Reg Chapman of WCCO News.

Given the nature of this year’s election cycle, the change in racial/ethnic demographics in the city and the use of RCV, the winner of both the ward 5 and ward 4 council races, and the city’s mayoral election will be decided on the voter turnout in communities of color. The residents of these communities have suffered from a lack of unified city wide representation over the last 15 years. Our community has been victimized and neglected over the years and we want to have a say in the shaping of our future.

Executive directors from North Minneapolis neighborhood organizations and several community partners, have come together to host three community forums for this election cycle. Our goal is to provide candidates with an opportunity to really understand the geographical, racial and economic diversity of North Minneapolis, give residents a chance to get to know their future public officials and to educate the city’s one and only minority majority voting ward on RCV.

Fall Neighborhood Inspections – Time to clean up!

It’s time for fall inspections in the neighborhood, here’s a brief notice from the city that you’ll be seeing in your mailbox soon, a friendly reminder to do your best to help our neighborhood look great!

Join us as we work ALL TOGETHER NOW!

A new initiative sponsored by the Department of Regulatory Services in partnership with neighborhood associations and participating businesses throughout the city.

housesThe City wants to partner with residents, neighborhood associations and local businesses to help make our neighborhoods a safe and clean place to live. Starting October 15, inspectors from the Department of Regulatory Services will be going out into your neighborhood, with a special focus on vacant properties or properties with repeated nuisance violations.

Do your part to tidy up your yards and alleys by:

  • Picking up and removing rubbish, old tires, and litter in yards & alleys.
  • Trimming bushes and trees that hang into the alley, sidewalk or street.
  • Removing volunteer trees and bushes from alleys and around the foundations of buildings.
  • Removing inoperable vehicles from your property (including unlicensed vehicles) or storing them in an enclosed garage.

This is all part of our “All Together Now!” neighborhood fall yard cleanup pilot initiative we hope to extend throughout the city in the future.  By taking care of your property now, you’ll not only make the neighborhood a better place, but City inspectors won’t have to follow up with any written orders.

How we can help:

We’ve contacted a number of local businesses who agreed to provide discounts on things that will help you spruce up your property as part of the cleanup. Visit our website at www.minneapolismn.gov/regservices for a list of businesses who have agreed to provide you with a discount on home improvement supplies if you show them one of our letters or orders, including this one, or call 311 or 612.673.3000 for a list of resources and participating businesses near you.  Check back on the website as we’ll be adding businesses to the list every time they make a commitment to help their communities by participating in this initiative.

So go out and check your property for any improvements that need to be done before we come through and issue orders.  If you do get an order from the city, take in your order to a participating business and get a discount on supplies that will help you correct it before a reinspection.

This is your chance to make a difference in the city by improving your neighborhood – join in, help a neighbor, and let’s work All Together Now!

Become a local Farmer! Sell your produce for profit

Vegetables_0006Are you a North Minneapolis resident growing your own fruits and vegetables? If you, or someone that you know has extra bounty to share, there’s an innovative resource available to help you earn money while sharing your produce with the local community. The Community Aggregation and Distribution Table is a resource at the West Broadway Farmers Market.

Working with the Community Ag. Table is as easy as following these simple steps:

  • Contact Matthew McGlory at matthew@westbroadway.org or 612.353.5178.
  • Drop off goods to the table at the Camden Farmers Market (4400 Osseo Rd, Thursdays, 3pm—7pm) or the West Broadway Farmers Market (900 West Broadway, Fridays, 3pm-7pm).
  • McGlory sells your produce on your behalf. You collect 100% of the sales.

The role of the Community Ag. Table is to support the local food system by keeping Northside-produced food and money spent on food within the Northside community and economy. The Community Ag. Table is coordinated by the West Broadway Coalition as part of the Fresh Corners project led by Appetite for Change and supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota’s Center for Prevention.

Contact Matthew McGlory at the West Broadway Coalition at 612.353.5178.
