Get Ready to Garden with our Local Food Hub

2014 registration is now open- join the Local Food Resource Hubs and start the countdown to spring!

The Local Food Resource Hubs are neighborhood networks of gardeners. The Hubs program is intended to provide home gardeners and community gardeners the support they need to grow, preserve, cook and compost their own fresh food by offering supplies, educational opportunities, and community connections in their neighborhood. The Local Food Resource Hubs program benefits neighborhoods by building community and increasing access to healthy food.

Residents of Minneapolis and St. Paul can join the Local Food Resource Hubs and select a small, medium, or large garden package- prices vary by size and partial scholarships are available. It’s basically a bulk buying club; packages of seeds and plants are available at a fraction of their retail price. Members pick up their seeds and plants at distribution events held across Minneapolis and St. Paul, which are run by Gardening Matters, Hub members, and countless neighborhood partners and volunteers.

But it’s about more than just the seeds and the plants. The Hubs program is meant to foster community development, using gardening as the tool. Once people are connected to their neighbors through gardening, they are more willing to share resources, collaborate, and make change in their community related to food, health, and gardening. An example of this is the Growing West Side Seed Library just in its launch phase, thanks to Growing West Side and Hub members in the West Side/West 7th areas of St. Paul. In this way, the Hubs help bring together people within and across neighborhoods who are growing food, which is the foundation to rebuilding a community-based food system.

5557326007_d503314d31_zThis is the fourth year of the Local Food Resource Hubs program. Last year in 2013 there were 900 members in the network, and the Hubs distributed more than 18,000 packets of seeds and 25,000 seedlings, 2,500 strawberry plants, 400 raspberry plants, and 30,000 pounds of compost.

Residents should contact Gardening Matters at 612-821-2358 or visit www.gardeningmatters.org/hubs for more information about the program, including a map of the Hub areas and the sign up form. English and Spanish paper forms are available from Gardening Matters and can be downloaded from the website as well.

See below for the upcoming seed distribution events. Members from any neighborhood in Minneapolis/St. Paul may join and pick up their seeds at the distribution event closest to their home.

Tell Your Neighbors About Winter Parking

regina flyering
Regina, our awesome intern, letting neighbors know where to park for safer streets and happier neighbors.

Winter parking restrictions has been in effect since Sunday, but many of our neighbors are not aware of the change. This can be especially difficult for new neighbors whose first language is not English, or those simply out of the loop. Help us get them informed by letting us know where to go.

If you have a block with a lot of cars parked on the even side of the street, let CNA staff know and we’ll do a doorknock and flyering on your block asap. Or, if you’d like to do this yourself, print the flyer below and flyer the cars or doors on your block so your neighbors don’t get towed and your street stays clear.

[button link=”http://www.clevelandneighborhood.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Winter-Parking-Restriction-Flyer.pdf” newwindow=”yes”] Download Flyer[/button]

Find out more about Winter Parking Restrictions here or by calling 311.

Our Work Featured in Minneapolis Connects

2014-02-11 07.50.54

Our fun and exciting outreach activities were featured in the City of Minneapolis’ Connects newsletter, both in print and online. Check out the article below:

Neighborhood Stories: Cleveland Neighborhood Association hosts innovative community building events

Last summer the Cleveland Neighborhood Association (CNA) and their neighborhood Step-Up Youth built a mobile Ball Pit, not for kids, but for adults to release their inhibitions, get in and sit down with a neighbor and to get to know one another. The ball pit was not only fun, but contained questions to ask one another, such as “What’s the nicest thing a neighbor has ever done for you?” or “What do you love about your neighborhood?”

2014-02-11 07.51.02In 2014, CNA plans to use the lessons they learned and the inspiration they received from residents to launch a “Connector Lab” project that will support residents in creating innovative community-building projects, train residents to become leaders in their community and work together to make change in the neighborhood.
CNA also hosted roving pop-up block parties throughout the neighborhood, which were inspired the creation of a Neighborhood Engagement Cart and provided an easy way to launch pop-up block parties.

CNA received support for the Ball Pit from a the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Minnesota, support for Neighborhood Engagement Cart from the Pohlad Foundation, and support for the Connector Lab from the Bush Foundation.

Watch for temporary “No Parking” signs as crews remove snow

noparkingBecause of snow and ice buildup along curbs, some streets are getting too narrow for fire trucks, ambulances and transit buses to get around. To ensure that the streets are open for emergency vehicles, “No Parking” signs will be posted in some locations. In some cases, crews will work to remove some of the accumulated snow and ice, as resources allow.

Look for and follow the  “No Parking” signs, and please help remind your neighbors to do the same. If you park in a spot posted for “No Parking” you may receive a parking ticket, and your car may be towed to the impound lot.

If we get more snowfall in the coming weeks, it may be necessary to impose Winter Parking Restrictions (a city-wide, one-side parking ban on non-Snow Emergency Routes) to help ensure that firefighters, medics and other emergency workers can reach homes and businesses on every street.

If you have questions about this work, just call 311.

Esté atento a las señales temporales de “No aparcar” (“No Parking”) mientras se retira la nieve

(Watch for temporary “No Parking” signs as crews remove snow –Spanish)
