Let’s talk about Penn and Lowry – Community Development Committee

snap 2015-03-03, 08_55_50We hope you can join us for the Community Development Committee held at CNA Office on Monday, March 9th at 6:30pm. We’ll be talking about Penn and Lowry Avenue and the development opportunities that you as a resident would like to see there.
If you haven’t attended a committee in a while we’d like to know why, please take our brief survey.

Agenda:
  • Penn and Lowry Visioning – Share your input and ideas with our team of Urban Planning students from the U of M who are helping CNA create a tangible vision for what the community would like to see on the commercial corridors of Penn and Lowry Avenue. Your input is critical to advocating with the city and county for what we as a neighborhood want to see in the community.
  • Property Tax Assessments – Are we being over taxed? A brief discussion on this article from the Star Tribune and input on whether the neighborhood should take any action to advocate change at the city level on it’s assessments.

RSVP HERE! See you next Monday at 6:30pm!

If you have any questions please send us a quick reply email or call 612-588-1155

Meet our New Interns

kotiareeniaHi my name is Kotiareenia (K) Taylor. I’m from Minneapolis, I’ve been a professional chef for 15 years and have cooked all around the twin cities for various organizations and restaurants. Currently, I am a full time student at Augsburg College majoring in sociology and minoring in theater performance. I’m excited to support Cleveland neighbors in building sustainable relationships with one another and improving the neighborhood both aesthetically and systematically. I believe that it is important to encourage those who are perpetually marginalized to work together – to build power and create the change – be the change they want to see in the world.

sarah rossmanGood morning my name is Sarah Rossman. I am currently attending the University of Minnesota, getting my Master’s in Youth Development Leadership. I have 14 plus years working with youth in Minneapolis. I have a real passion for working with youth and North Minneapolis Communities. I am really looking forward to working with the Cleveland Neighborhood association. I am excited to work for a non profit and see the ins and outs of the organization and working with a grass roots organization. My experience is mainly with government organizations so this will be a new adventure. I’m mostly looking forward to work with the Cleveland Neighborhood/community and getting to know the residents and coming up with new projects to help unite this community.

2015-02-23 10.22.29Hello, My name is Karla Guadalupe Arredondo Payan. First thing to know is that there is a small number of people that can pronounce my full name. I am from North Minneapolis and have lived in the community my entire life. I am currently studying at Augsburg College for a double major in Sociology and Metro Urban Studies. My passion lies within the community and the rich history it has to offer us. My experience living in North Minneapolis combined with my love of research has lead me to conduct a few research projects about North Minneapolis, that give a voice to the unheard. I enjoy doing research projects related to social change and community engagement, resident or the public sector of non-profits. I am am excited to be working with the Cleveland Neighborhood Association to bring voice to residents who sometimes feel are not heard. I look forward to meeting and getting to build wonderful relationships with the residents of Cleveland Neighborhood.

Join us at a Cleveland Committee in March!

mailing label sizeEvery resident has a voice in the Cleveland Neighborhood. The way CNA is run is through resident-driven Committees around four themes: Crime and Safety, Community Development, Youth and Events. Each Committee meets monthly to plan, discuss and take action on issues and ideas that are important to residents. The committees report to the Cleveland Neighborhood board and this is how the resources of the organization are directed in keeping with the vision of the community. There is no long term commitment to participate in a committee, just make some time and come check one out next month! We’d love to have you and you can sign up at our Community Hub or on Facebook.

If you’ve known about our committees and just haven’t attended, we’d love to know why. Take our quick survey so that we can better serve you and your neighbors in the future. Thanks!

100% Block Clubs in 2015

T1-2014-07-30 18.29.07he Cleveland Neighborhood embarks on an ambitious goal in 2015 to establish block clubs on 100% of the blocks in the neighborhood and identify Community Connectors on each of those blocks. We have been so grateful to those who have stepped up and volunteered to serve as block leaders and have done the grassroots work of connecting neighbors, hosting block parties and so much more. We’ve seen the positive effect of connected blocks in more stability, social connections and lower crime. If you don’t already have a block club contact us!

We’ve now matched over 200 youth from the community with bikes through the program. It is a great opportunity for families and a great opportunity for us to build strong connections with neighbors and families. In 2015, we hope to host a giveaway site on location in the Cleveland Neighborhood to give even more families direct access, particularly those who rely primarily on public transportation. If you would like to be involved and help us plan the 2015 Bike giveaway please contact us at the officer via phone or text at 612-567-1262.
