2015 A Year in Pictures

2015yearinreviewThey say a picture is worth 1000 words, well we’ve collected 52,000+ words then (but just 52 pictures, don’t get overwhelmed) for you to reminisce on all that’s happened in the Cleveland Neighborhood in 2015. What’s missing is your beautiful moments that we don’t capture on camera, those connections with neighbors, a random act of kindness, your own families memorable moments. We’d love to hear your stories of what’s happened in the neighborhood last year or what’s happening this year. Share your stories in the comments here or on social media or email us at cna@clevelandneighborhood.org. We’ll be featuring neighbor stories through out the year in 2016. But now, on to a Year in Review. And you can view past years as well if you’d like at yearinreview.clevelandneighborhood.org.

See you at Holiday on 44th Tonight!

Holiday on 44thDon’t miss this great community event tonight, Dec 4th, 6-9pm on 44th Avenue. The Cleveland Neighborhood Association is a proud Sponsor of Holiday on 44th and excited about the collaboration with other community organizations to bring this great event to you! Get more information at http://www.holidayon44th.com

It’s not the toasted marshmallows or the clip-clop of horses pulling hay wagons. It’s not the music or the twinkling lights on the avenue. It’s the smile on your neighbor’s face and the cheerful greeting from someone you’ve never met that makes you realize you live in a wonderful place.

Holiday on 44th turns a dark winter night into a magical one. You can be part of the magic that brings neighbors together over roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate.

Now in its 18th year, “Holiday on 44th: An Old-Fashioned Camden Celebration” is a Minneapolis tradition. On the first Friday in December, from 6 to 9 pm, an ordinary city street turns into a twinkling wonderland. From music and crafts at Patrick Henry High School to face painters and magicians at Loring Community School, the street sparkles with cheer.

Artists perform in various locations along 44th Ave. N., which is closed to all automobile traffic for the evening. Horse-drawn wagons provide transportation between locations, giving the celebration a friendly and old-fashioned atmosphere. Music, magicians, fire jugglers, chestnut roasting and a fantastic craft fair make up a small portion of this diverse and exciting event that draws attendance from all over the metro area. Holiday on 44th is a FREE event.

Holiday on 44th has been produced annually by a dedicated group of volunteers in the Camden community of North Minneapolis. It uses the arts to promote understanding and friendships between the diverse peoples that make up our Camden, Minneapolis community. In addition, because the arts activities of our event has drawn more and more people to the community, an improved business climate has been noted along 44th Avenue North.

Sign up for a Free Bike Giveaway through CNA at Lucy Laney!

photo 1Cleveland is excited to be partnering with Free Bikes 4 Kidz for the third year in a row, but this year we have a very exciting addition: We’ll be distributing bikes locally right from Lucy Laney School. Our goal is to register 150 kids and distribute bikes right in the neighborhood just in time for the holidays. In the past, families have had to travel to Maple Grove or south Minneapolis to pick up their bikes, which is quite difficult in the winter and if you are on public transit.

If you are interested or know a family that is interested in receiving a free bike, please have them contact the Cleveland Neighborhood Association via Facebook, email or phone 612-588-1155 to sign-up. We are also in need of volunteers to help on the day of the bike giveaway. If you are interested in volunteering please reach out to us as well. Our goal this year is to put as many smiles on as many faces as we can!

Come Out To River Connect – September 29th

promo929When was the last time you visited the Mississippi River? What did you do there? Most north Minneapolis residents are less then a mile from this amazing majestic body of water and yet, because of infrastructure and other barriers, we rarely enjoy the great asset and amenities offered by the River. At our fall North First: River Connect event we’ll come together as a community to engage with one another and hear a series of short presentations around this topic of our connection to the River. North First short-form presentations (only 3 minutes each) creates a highly engaging and entertaining evening for residents of all backgrounds. There’s a happy hour before hand (starting at 6pm) complete with a Water Bar, a chance to hear from amazing bartenders about the exquisite offerings available from throughout our region. And there is an Info Exchange, a resource space to learn more about the organizations and presenters from the evening as well as other topics.

We hope you can make it out to this exciting event next Tuesday, September 29th, 6-8:30pm

compostThe Folwell Neighborhood in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling, are proud to announce the opening of a residential organics drop-off at Folwell Park on August 19, 2015. Residents interested in participating are encouraged to stop by the park anytime between 6 -8 p.m. on August 19th to learn about organics recycling and get their questions answered by the City’s Recycling Coordinator.  Bring your organics as the drop-off carts will be on site for the meeting!

The drop-off will be open to all Minneapolis residents at no cost.

For more information on the Folwell Park residential organics drop-off and the citywide organics recycling program roll-out, visit minneapolismn.gov/organics.

  • We want folks to sign up online to participate.
  • When they sign-up they’ll get a welcome email and after the first six weeks,
  • We’ll use the email list to send out the code to the locks to the participants.
  • We also will use the email to provide updates on how the program is going and in the event of contamination, as a way to communicate with residents on why a particular item cannot be placed in the organics.

For the first several weeks, the drop-off will be open Tuesdays evenings (4 – 7 p.m.) and Saturday mornings (9a.m. – 12p.m.). Volunteers will be on site to answer questions, train new participants, and gather some information from residents using the drop off.  After volunteers are no longer needed, those who sign up to participate for the drop-off will be given the code to the locks.

Open Streets on Lowry: See You September 26th

openstreetsposter

For the fourth year in a row, Open Streets/Harvest Fest will return to Lowry Avenue, bringing with it a day of fun-filled activities along the nearly two-mile section of street.
The day-long event, which will take place on Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m., will create a safe, car-free environment on one of North Minneapolis’ most heavily used streets. The event is designed to allow people to play, be physically active and take part in a wide range of related activities. It will stretch from Vincent Avenue to Emerson Avenue.

Four years ago, Open Streets combined with Harvest Fest, which was originally created to celebrate the reopening of the Lowry corridor in North Minneapolis. This free event is open to everyone and are organized to give people the opportunity to safely enjoy biking, walking, skating, playing and using wheelchairs on their neighborhood street without the presence of motorized traffic.
