What is it?

Some homeowners are faced with the tough choice of paying for repairs that would keep their home safe or making their monthly mortgage payment. PPL’s Foreclosure Prevention Repair Grants help homeowners make needed repairs, awarding up to $7,500 to address one distinct home repair, including:

  • Electrical, structural, or flooring problems
  • Leaking plumbing or roofing
  • Foundation repair
  • Siding, stucco, or other exterior enclosure issues
  • Mold removal
  • Bed bug extermination
  • Or another major health or safety repair

Do I qualify? Grantees must:

  • Own a home in a designated area of Minneapolis or St. Paul (see map at right for detail).
  • Make 80% or less of the household area median income ($64,400 for a family of four).
  • Have monthly housing costs that equal 40% or more of their monthly income.
  • Need a repair that costs more than 100% of their monthly income.
  • Have income sufficient to maintain housing costs once the repair is completed.
  • Meet, for free, with a PPL financial coach for grant approval.  Grantees may continue to meet with the financial coach for as long as they like.

How do I apply?

Please call 612.455.5221 for an application and more information. Applications are being accepted through February 14.

PPL’s Foreclosure Prevention Repair Grants are made possible by funding from Wells Fargo.

Fight The Cold With The Home Energy Squad

home energy squad logo

Besides thinking about your cold toes on a day like today, you might be thinking about your energy bill hurting your pocketbook. Now is a great time to think about reducing that energy bill and inviting the Home Energy Squad to help you do that. Cleveland residents have been utilizing this great resource for the past four years and nearly 10% of all Cleveland households have been involved in the program! Learn more on the Home Energy Squad Website or below.

The program involves energy consultants visiting residents’ homes to evaluate energy savings opportunities, and install energy-efficient materials. The program’s goal is to help residents save money and energy by learning more about their home, and gaining access to energy saving materials.  All the cost of the diagnostic tests, materials, and labor are included in the $70 visit fee (the visits are discounted $30 for Minneapolis residents).

If the visit fee is a barrier to involvement would scholarships from CNA be helpful? If you’ve had a visit from the Energy Squad would you be willing to share our experience? Comment below or shoot us an email. Thanks!

3241 Russell A Possible Green Home Proposal

Last week we posted a proposal for 3210 Vincent Avenue as a possible site for a new-construction Green Home. Based on feedback we and the developer have received, a different proposal is being considered to build at 3241 Russell Ave N, rather then 3210 Vincent. The rest of the information about the project remains the same and is listed below…

Now in it’s third phase, Green Homes North is an initiative of the city to build 100 energy-efficient homes on city-owned vacant lots in north Minneapolis. One of the recently proposed sites is 3241 Russell Ave N, just north of Lowry Avenue in the Cleveland Neighborhood. Peyser LLC, a for-profit developer is interested in building on that site.

According to the Realtor working on the project:

“These homes meet “green” construction standards for the program and are architecturally designed homes, with an emphasis on being energy-efficient.  Under the program, the home built in Cleveland will be sold to owner-occupants with a household income limitation of 115 percent of the Area Median Income for the Twin Cities region.  Final market value will be determined by comparable, market-rate sales in the area. ”

You can view the layout here (pdf) or below. We are looking for feedback from residents before our upcoming board meeting so that the Cleveland Neighborhood Board can make the most informed decision on behalf of the community as to whether to support this project or not. If you’d like to give input please call, email or text us. Thank you for your time.
